Notes | This poem appears to refer to the anti-colonial Mau Mau uprising in Kenya, which occurred in the 1950s. This uprising was fought between British colonial forces and Mau Mau fighters. The Mau Mau was a banned secret society of displaced Kikuyu tribespeople. The Mau Mau hid out in the Aberdares and Kenyan mountains, appearing in sudden attacks to hit civil services, colonial properties, and settlers. In this poem, the speaker describes the scenes around the mountains of Kenya, in which the Mau Mau, oathbound and living in hidden lairs, listen to the colonial voices planning their destruction. |
