Notes This poem reflects on the fall of France during World War II, and the establishment of the Vichy puppet regime under the Nazis. The speaker of the poem speaks directly to his beloved France, telling his country that he has crossed the bridge over the Loire river: crossing the Loire into the ‘Free Zone’ enabled the poet to be a Resistance fighter during World War II, and the bridge has significance as a site of strategic fighting over many periods of history.
