Notes | This poem is set in Cape Coast, Ghana. The first-person speaker refers to the history of slavery (Cape Coast was a historical centre of slave trade) and to the military coup of 1966 when Kwame Nkrumah, named in the poem, was deposed. There is an explicit reference in the poem to economic hardship, but also the ubiquity of international fashion brands. |
