Notes The suffering of the people of Iraq during and after the Gulf War is described in this poem. The speaker of the poem is about to celebrate Easter in Ireland, yet the reality of the situation in Iraq cannot be ignored. The complicity of the Western world in letting the war happen is referenced: 'thar ár gceann go léir', 'on all of our behalfs'. There are also references to Irish mythology: the 'badhbh' over the battlefield, and the 'bean sí na hIaráice' who cries for the loss of her people. The provenance and ancient culture of Iraq is also mentioned, as well as the shame felt by the world for Iraq's destruction.
