Notes This poem describes the legacy of Nelson Mandela - using his original forename of 'Rolihlahla', which faded after he became more widely known as Madiba in later years. The poem references the militant arm of the African National Congress, Mandela's long imprisonment in Robben Island, and his fight to make South Africa a freer and more humane place through democracy, after his release from prison. The speaker of the poem describes seeing him in 'Inis Ealga', a poetic name for Ireland.
