| Notes | The title of the poem is an explicit reference to Native American activism, namely the Occupation of Alcatraz (November 1969 - June 1971).The poem refers to Native American activism in a wider context of colonization and makes specific reference to the nineteenth-century Oglala Sioux chief leader Tȟašúŋke Kȟokípȟapi (Young-Man-Afraid-of-His-Horses). Note that a more accurate translation of his name is They-Fear-Even-His Horses. First published in New Weather (1973). |
