Notes This poem mentions the melting of the ice-caps and the rising of the ocean levels. Despite the impending destruction, however, the 'genius loci' or 'guardian spirit' appears to remain. This malevolent spirit is the one who puts the seasons out of joint, leaves his breath on the graves of murdered girls, and is the whisper that frightens the eavesdropper. It is not clear what this spirit represents.
