| Notes | The speaker of the poem, during a pottery class, moulds the shape of a human head and its morose expression reminds her of a Holocaust victim or a a persecuted poet, such as Osip Mandelstam, oppressed by the Stalinist régime. The speaker implies a commonality with the persecuted of the world in the final verse, in which she states that we are all 'walking towards the kiln' - could this be another nod to the Holocaust? There is also a mention of Brian Friel, Irish playwright, and Froech, a hero in the Connaught cycle of Irish mythology. |
