Paratext Text Als ich an Bord des Dampfers gang, sah ich, hörte und roch ich, daß ich eine Grenze überschritten hatte... Heinrich Böll, Irisches Tagebuch.
Notes Poem about an exchange between the speaker of the poem and the writer, Heinrich Böll, who toured Ireland and wrote 'Irisches Tagebuch', a travel book about Ireland. The speaker encounters Böll at school. The speaker mentions his imaginary 'journey' through Germany and Europe with Böll, describing the bomb damage to the Köln Cathedral, and the French beaches in Normandy at which the Allies landed on D-Day. The poem mentions some of Böll's experience in the Wehrmacht, including his time at the Siege of Odessa in the Ukraine. The speaker of the poem continues to 'swap notes' with Böll, and proclaims that he wants to understand Ireland, Europe, and the world. The paratext, from Irisches Tagebuch, roughly translates as: 'As I got on board the steamer, I saw, heard and smelled that I had crossed a border'.
