Notes This poem makes veiled references to the Hiroshima bombing and its aftereffects: 'black rain' is mentioned in the first verse, and it was commonly noted that black rain fell after the bombing in 1945 over the ruins of the city. The Hiroshima maiden, mentioned in the third verse, may well refer to the famous 'Hiroshima maidens', a group of young women who had been disfigured by the bombing and whose marriage prospects had been destroyed as a result. There are several juxtapositions to Irish culture in the poem, such as 'Japanese poteen.'
