Notes Speaker of the poem reflects on his childhood games with a model of a P51 Mustang aircraft. The speaker recalls that twenty years previously, the real version of the aircraft was dodging and attacking German Me109 (Messerschmitt) aircraft during World War II. Contrast between peaceful Irish childhood and reality of warfare. Mention of President John F. Kennedy's visit to Ireland and his impending assassination as well, unbeknownst to him. Hints of a loss of innocence in the poem - the childhood games versus the reality of war, the hopeful, youthful American president and his fate.
