| Notes | This poem describes the reopening of Scottish Parliament in Holyrood, Edinburgh, by Queen Elizabeth II in October 2004. There are strong overtones of colonial criticism here, as the speaker of the poem, who is riding a white horse, attempts to enter the parliament buildings but is prevented from doing so by police. This character attempts to explain the situation but they do not understand the Scots Gaelic which he speaks. The speaker describes himself as being locked out by accident. Does the speaker of this poem perhaps represent a Scottish king, noble, or chieftain, attempting to reclaim his birthright as head of Scotland? Or is this poem based on a real event? |
