Notes | The speaker of the poem discusses the death of Salvador Allende, who took his own life after right-wing forces in Chile united with American CIA agents to bring about his downfall. This was the failure the the first democratically elected Marxist president in Latin America. The speaker of the poem here isn't too sympathetic to the Marxist/Communist cause, however. There is a mysterious reference to the poet, Pablo Neruda, who died 12 days after Allende. Both of these deaths have come under much scrutiny, even in modern times, with both deaths being investigated as recently as 2011. |
