Notes | This poem is a comparison of Britain's colonial violence in India and Ireland: cutting of Indian weaver's fingers like the taking of scalps from colonized Irish people. The speaker of the poem acknowledges that it's no surprise, therefore, that the Birmingham Six are still in jail. The Six were arrested and coerced into signing confessions for the Birmingham bomb, which killed 21 people. They spent 16 years in jail for a crime they didn't commit. |
