Paratext Text (cuireadh go tóín poill, 30 Eanáir 1945)
Notes The speaker of this short poem describes the sinking of the Wilhelm Gustloff, a German military transport ship, by a Russian torpedo in the latter days of World War II. The boat was carrying Germans who were fleeing from re-captured lands, particularly those capture by the Red Army. Over 9,000 people were killed in the attack, making it the worst sea disaster in history. The speaker of the poem describes various occupants of the ship and mentions their Nazi sympathies but also their attempts to save each other in the aftermath of the disaster.
