Notes | The speaker of the poem wanders through Ardeevin Graveyard, in which the '98 men - likely a reference to the United Irishmen uprising of 1798 - are buried. The speaker of the poem notably compares the dead of that conflict to the dead of Srebenice, a Bosnian town which was the site of a genocide of Bosnian men and boys during the break-up of Yugoslavia and the Bosnian war. The poem focuses on the hopelessness and cruelty of war, and seems to connect the conflicts of Bosnia and Ireland together. The speaker is haunted by the many deaths of history, it appears. |
