| Notes | The poet-speaker of the poem accounts his loss of 'pride' during his peacekeeping days in the Lebanon. When Israeli shells began to come down on the Irish 'Batt' - battalion - the poet-speaker ran for his rifle, helmet and protective gear. This led to him being slagged off by the 'Old Sweats' - the veterans who had been in the peacekeeping a bit longer. The poet-speaker describes this as making him realize that he could never look scared in a warzone, especially with veterans around. |
