Notes | This is a short lyric poem which highlights the staggering class differences in America: here, the speaker of the poem describes in detail a beggar-woman sorting though rubbish in Times Square, New York. In contrast, the second verse of the poem focuses on a woman on an expensive boat in Newport, an upmarket area of the city. The women's appearances and life situations are strongly contrasted in the poem, and it emphasises the lives of the 'haves' and the 'have nots' in America. |
