Paratext Text | Nuair a tháinig deireadh leis an Dara Cogadh Mór seoladh suas le dhá mhilliún Cosacach in aghaidh a dtola ar ais fé chuing an tioránaigh Stalin. Cé gur mhair roinnt acu seo taobh amuigh de theorainn na Rúise ó am na Réabhlóide i 1917 fós tugadh ar lámh iad don Rúis Shóibhéideach. Chinn roinnt acu lámh a chur ina mbás féin in áit géilleadh don fhilleadh. Tá an dá dhán seo bunaithe ar eachtraí fírinneacha a tharla in abhanntrach na Drau idir Leinz agus Oberdrauburg i 1945. |
Notes | Substantial paratext of this poem gives the background of the characters and events. The poem is based on true events surrounding the suicide of the some of the Cossack peoples, who were unwilling to be subsumed into Stalinist Russia after WW2. The poem is brutal in its descriptions of the suicide of an entire family, with the husband, Pyotr, executing his wife and family, then killing himself, rather than be part of Stalinist Russia. The Bolshevik regime had seen the process of Decossackization, attempting to suppress the culture of the Cossack people. The incident described in this poem happened when Cossacks, many of whom had fought for the Axis powers during World War II, were 'handed back' to Russia at the Yalta Conference. Many chose to die rather than submit. |
