Notes | This is an anti-war poem which doesn't name country, place, time, or any other contextual information, but seems to be in the vein of Wilfred Owen's anti-war poems: the young men die in their droves in wars, leaving families, wives, and children behind in destitution, while the 'lucht na cainte' - 'those who talk' - possibly in reference to politicians, win the day. The 'bua na cainte' - the 'gift of the gab' - in this poem is maligned by the speaker, who views the 'talkers' as akin to murderers. 'Talk' has led to the death of countless men in a war. |
