Notes This short poem is a comparison between a person in an insane asylum or institution seeking freedom out into the world outside. Meanwhile, the world outside is not free, as the incarcerated man thinks - the reality of the brutal world outside is explored in the poem. It is full of killing, explosions, and bullets, the demolishing of protective walls, and bereft widows wondering if this is the end of the world. Ironically, those who are 'free' on the outside, wish to be protected behind walls, as the patient of the institution is. The poem asks what the meaning of true freedom really is, in today's reality.
