Notes This is a poem about an Irishwoman who was going to be hanged for crimes in colonial Ireland. She manages to escape the death penalty, but is sent to Van Diemen's Land - a notorious colonial destination for English and Irish criminals. All things considered, Eilís considers herself lucky to have been spared the hangman, although her past in Ireland is fading into the mist, and she is surrounded by an Anglicised new world.
