Notes This lyric sequence captures different vignettes which appear to discuss aspects of the life of immigrant or colonized communities. Scenes captured include an orchard and agricultural work; footsteps on the footpaths of Paris; cooking meat over the fire; lovers waking up in the morning, and so forth. Verses (v) and (vi) especially make pointed reference to colonialism, with the speaker of the poem discussing his 'taking' of lands by the seal of a handshake, and the Irish pubs widely dispersed in cities - alongside notices rejecting Irish people and Black people from the premises. Little context for the scenes are given in the poem, but the speaker of the poem appears to be an Irish emigrant, who is perhaps mingling with others immigrant communities in London.
