Notes | The location of this poem in the collection means that it is clearly referential to previous poems about the 'Ghost Dance' and the Wounded Knee Massacre. The speaker of the poem describes the direct aftermath of the Wounded Knee Massacre: a snowy morning, covering up the 'horrors' of history. The whiteness of the snow could also be read as significant, i.e. the white race covering the earth. Additionally, the end of the poem mentions the 'aonchineálacht' or 'uniformity' of the future - when the white settlers will control all, and all dissenters will be wiped out. |
