Notes The speaker of the poem describes the actions of those who believed themselves to be the 'Just' and 'Righteous' of history, and gives numerous examples: Cromwellian soldiers sacking Drogheda to rid Ireland of Catholics, Torquemada's brutal Spanish Inquisition to quash unorthodoxy in Catholicism, the Nazi secret police, the Gestapo and their actions to 'de-jew' Germany during The Final Solution. The poem also highlights how people become dehumanized during these righteous purges of history.
