Notes | This poem is spoken from viewpoint of Yevgeny Yevtushenko, a dissenting Russian poet who refused to conform to Soviet art demands. The poem makes clear his viewpoints on artistic freedom, Soviet censorship, and government propaganda. He wishes to stand by what is right and just, but also admits that it is farcical that history will remember him as brave, when all he did was speak openly and truthfully. This poem is based on a poem by Yevtushenko himself. |
