Notes | This poem is concerned with gender-based violence in two very different contexts. The first stanza recounts the fate of two female 'Untouchables' who were burned to death. 'Untouchability' is most often associated with the Dalit communities in India who are considered 'polluting'. The term 'polluting' is used in this poem. The second stanza refers is to an event in Ireland in which a woman was beaten to death because of what others perceived as low morals. The intersection of gender, social grouping and violent discrimination is emphasized in this poem. |
