Notes | The speaker of the poem describes a Northern Irish seaman, killed at war between the Foyle and Murmansk, possibly during the Norwegian Campaign or the Battle of the Atlantic. The soldier's cultural identity is unknown: no longer will the 12th or St Patrick's day be celebrated by him, depending on his background. The speaker notes that the man's body was never recovered, meaning that his ghost still lingers in the waters. |
