Notes The speaker of the poem describes a young man from the Falls Road in Belfast in the RAF - accomplishing deeds he didn't think possible. Compared to his previous life, hauling coal up and down the Falls Road, the RAF experience is dangerous and glamorous, akin to being a movie star like Errol Flynn. The bombing and killing are thrilling to him, and he becomes desensitized to his own comrades' deaths. The name 'Hector' is a reference to the Trojan warrior of the same name, considered to be the greatest warrior during the Trojan war, before his death at the hands of Achilles.
