Notes | This poem is a reflection on a post-war Bosnian landscape. The poem echoes with the Communist past of Yugoslavia: the Communist sideboard, and the shed door upon peasant land with 'SLAVIA' written upon it. The poem also contains hints as well of the war, such as 'a ghostly helmet'. The sickle moon, a symbol of Islam, could also refer obliquely to the genocide of Bosniak Muslims during the conflict. Does the first 'summer of aftermath' refer to the literal first year after the conflict, or is it more of a reflection of the passage of time over years, and how evidence of Communist rule still abounds? |
