Notes This poem is written from the perspective of an Irish emigrant woman in America. The speaker of the poem, who speaks in first person, gives her opinions on the Italian immigrants who have moved into the area. The speaker describes her new neighbours in pointedly xenophobic and bigoted terms - mentioning their cuisine and language disparagingly. This is a poem which gives insight into the racist and xenophobic attitudes of Irish people who emigrated to the United States.
