Notes | This is a an allegorical poem with strong implications of slavery, whipping, punishment and systematic racism. This is one of several poems from this poet with 'child of' in the title. They appear to describe the speaker's sense of self and historical identity. Here, the capitalistic 'value' of her 'crude oil' skin is juxtaposed with the whips and lashes that she suffers - an undeniable reference to the slavery of people of colour throughout history. The mention of titanium, diamonds, and jewels also implies colonial plunder, although this is implicit. |
