Notes | This poem could be making reference to any population of refugees at any period of history. Given the time of its publishing, it is likely to refer to the recent European refugee crisis. There are references to several Greek and Macedonian areas, including Kilkis (the frontier of several wars during the 20th Century), Solun, and Kostur. The speaker of the poem reflects upon the 'new home of dialects and names' that awaits the travellers. There is also a pointed note of 'where Macedonia cleaves' - reference to disputes between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia. |
