Notes This poem is a poetic love letter to the speaker's home city of Sao Paulo, Brazil. In the poem, the speaker traces various aspects of city life. Most notably, he mentions immigrant workers who have built the city, but own nothing of it; the dirt and litter of the city clogging their ancestral rivers; and the poverty of children, performing for money on the side of the road. Despite these aspects of poverty and deprivation, the speaker expresses his love for his 'beloved' city.
