Notes | The speaker of the poem describes her disappointment and struggle with the realities of Brexit, and with the rising tide of reactionary racism in Britain, as a result of hundreds of years of colonial power draining away. The poem is written in an almost humorous break-up style, as she struggles with 'breaking up' with England itself. The reactionary racism of the Brexit phenomenon is well-describes by the allegory of an abusive and violent partner, who is 'out of control, he's lashing out'. She expresses thanks and relief at being in Ireland during these times, while England falls into chaos. |
