Notes This is a poem that seems to strongly hint at the refugee crisis in the Mediterranean sea. The Greek island, Kythira, was often the landing site for refugees crossing the sea for a better life. The clay dinghy at the beginning, on which the speaker and his companion travel, seems to hint at the dangerous journey undertaken over the sea for sanctuary. There is also a reference to a journey with a son, or a dog, which might imply the travelling of whole families across the Mediterranean for a better life.
