Notes A short lyric poem which marries the hemlock that killed the philosopher Socrates with a 'marauding ion' of the Hiroshima bomb - both symbols of human folly and self-destruction. Cologne Cathedral, the location of the poem, was frequently bombed during World War II - and the mention of Rodin's Cathedral sculpture (of two touching hands) gives credence to the image of hemlock and radiation combining.
