| Notes | On seeing graffiti reading 'NO HOPE' on the window of a shop, the speaker of the poem expresses annoyance at the lack of correct punctuation and demands the slogan be written out, again and again, on the walls and cars around the world until Basra is reached. This is likely a reference to the then-ongoing War in Iraq, launched as part of the War on Terror. There appears to be an implicit criticism of the invasion of Iraq in this poem. |
