Notes This poem was written as an homage to the Spanish poet and playwright, Federico García Lorca. During the Spanish Civil war he was shot to death by supporters of General Francisco Franco in an execution without trial. This poem appears to reference aspects of his life and writings, as the speaker reads over a biography of his life. The poem appears to also refer to the Andalusian travelling people to whom Lorca felt a great affinity, and to his hatred of enforced, orthodox religious beliefs. The poet is known to have been strongly influenced by the writings of Lorca.
