Notes | This short poem is included in Ridge's first poetry collection The Ghetto and Other Poems (1918) published during the end of WWI and set in the New York neighborhood of Hester Street, an area associated with the working class and Jewish immigrants. The poem which opens the collection acts as an epigraph or poetic introduction and assumes the speaking voice of an immigrant who addresses the host country, its people, and America's promised freedom. The speaker questions the American people's willingness to accept migrant others, especially those with little material wealth. |
