Notes This short poem is included in the sequence of poems 'Manhattan Lights' in Ridge's first poetry collection The Ghetto and Other Poems (1918). There is an explicit reference to economic inequality in this poem: the cafés and neon signs of Broadway are contrasted with the dreary existence of impoverished and homeless immigrants - 'flotsam of the five oceans / here on this raft of the world'. There is also an explicit reference to police brutality against those sleeping rough.
