Notes | The long narrative poem is set in a cancer ward on a 'nightmare voyage' where a female patient contemplates health rights, physical degeneration and social inequality. References to mythical gods and figures such as Athene, Medusa, Neptune, the Nereids, and Perseus are contrasted to modern-day capitalist societies where armies are killing innocent civilians and businessmen and rich people have power. References to the Holy Land and Lourdes which allude to religious convention and oppression are highlighted by the presence of a 'Black Maria' who is pursued by the police as a criminal. The final lines evoke themes of death, mortality, memory, and class prejudice. |
