Notes | The speaker reflects on a series of figures while waiting to be seen by a doctor and recalls the Sphinx and writers such as Edward Dahlberg and Jorge Luis Borges, as well as the Tahitian cannibals. The reference to Dahlberg -who is mentioned again in the concluding stanza- touches upon issues of human rights. Dahlberg, in particular, was a proletarian writer who fought during WWI and later wrote articles and novels against Nazism. An advocate for fundamental humanism, he worked as an editor during WWII promoting the safeguarding of human rights around the world. |
