Notes | The poem responds to the painting by Artemisia Gentileschi 'Judith slaying Holofernes' (1620-21). Gentileschi, who had made two versions of the same topic, depicts the scene of Holofernes' violent slaying by Judith and her maidservant recounted in the BIble. The painter famously exressed her identification with Judith due to her own traumatic experience of rape by an older male painter when she was seventeen years old. The speaker of the poem, likewise, indentifies with Judith and Gentileschi to make larger claims about gender violence. |
