Notes | The poem is included in her collection Dostoevsky’s Grave (Dedalus Press, 1991). The speaker of the poem is an eighty-year-old woman who is evicted by another old woman. The latter asks her grandson Yuri to intervene. The speaker then engages in a conversation with the young man and they end up talking about the price of shoes in Kharkov (modern day Ukraine). In the concluding lines, they agree to meet again in Yalta in Anton Chekhov's famous White Dacha house. The poem addresses themes of poverty, housing, and deprivation. |
