Notes The poem is included in Bardwell's collection Dostoevsky’s Grave (Dedalus Press, 1991) and focuses on a historical and religious figure, Kassia or Kassiani. Kassia was a Byzantine poetess who refused to marry Emperor Theophilos choosing instead to lead a monastic life. Her refusal forced her to be banished and even though she is a neglected female poet, she remains famous for having given voice to Mary Magdalene in one of her hymns.
