| Notes | This is a short poem which talks of the 'peaca dubh na hEorpa' - the black sin of Europe, which may mean the legacy of European colonization in the New World. The setting of the poem is America, and the speaker describes an oppressive, 'heavy silence', which has infected everything. Slavery is mentioned, as well as the Irish who have 'made their way up in the world' and abandoned other immigrant communities. Could the speaker of the poem be criticizing those who are Irish who have forgotten their pasts as poor immigrants? Those who remain as poor immigrants are described as the rubbish of the old empires of the world. |
