| Notes | This poem describes the total colonization of America: there is no presence of native tribes any more, such as Mohawk and Huron. There is a notable mention of the Lewis and Clarke expedition (1803-06), the US expedition to explore acquired lands after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803. The speaker casts a sad eye on the state of the native peoples of North America. They have vanished almost completely as a result of American expansion - and there is no mystery or sense of adventure left in the certainty of the new America. |
