Notes | This poem highlights the importance of Ellis Island - particularly to the Irish emigrants to America, but also to incoming emigrants in general; 12 million of them over the years passed through Ellis island. The poet-speaker of the poem mentions his own mother, who emigrated to America. Ellis Island is also connected to other sites in Ireland in the poem, including the Blaskets and Hy Breasail, a mythological island which was said to appear in the Atlantic Ocean. The poem underlines the 'melting-pot' aspect of America, and how many people had to 'de-culture' themselves the fit into their new country. |
