Notes | This poem can be understood as a meditation on wartime violence in general rather than a response to a specific war. The shell-pocked Holiday Inn may be an allusion to wartime violence in Sarajevo and Beirut. The 'Holiday Inn' hotel in each of these cities are among the most bombed in the world. This also brings to mind the Europa Hotel in Belfast (bombed 33 times between 1971-1994) and thus violence in Northern Ireland. Words such as trench and infantry in the poem appear to be allusions to World War I. |
